Ness B. Shroff - Delay Optimality in Load Balancing Systems
Ness B. Shroff holds the Ohio Eminent Scholar Chaired Professorship of Networking and Communications at The Ohio State University, USA as well as an honorary Guest professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University in China and visiting position at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (personal homepage).
Abstract of the talk: We are in the midst of a major data revolution. The total data generated by humans from the dawn of civilization until the turn of the new millennium is now being generated every other day. Driven by a wide range of data-intensive devices and applications, this growth is expected to continue its astonishing march, and fuel the development of new and larger data centers. In order to exploit the low-cost services offered by these resource-rich data centers, application developers are pushing computing and storage away from the end-devices and instead deeper into the data-centers. Hence, the end-users’ experience is now dependent on the performance of the algorithms used for data retrieval, and job scheduling within the data-centers. In particular, providing low-latency services are critically important to the end-user experience for a wide variety of applications.
Anurag Kumar - Cyber Physical Systems over Wireless Networks: Performance, Designe, Inference, Control
Anurag Kumar is a Full Professor and Director at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India (personal homepage).
Abstract of the talk: Practical implementations of Cyber Physical Systems, for example, in support of the Industry 4.0 vision, will typically involve substantial wireless networking, due to ease of deployment, retrofitting, expansion, and reconfiguration. The wireless platform will be the Internet of Things, based on wireless networking standards (e.g., IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15.4, or the emerging cellular MTC standards) or proprietary wireless technologies. Unlike the in-building wireless networks for Internet access, IoT networks for Industrial CPS applications will need to be designed for providing quality of service, depending on the application. In this talk, after introducing the topic, we will provide insights into the performance of a commonly used indoor wireless technology for IoT, and an approach to the design of such IoT networks. Then we will provide glimpses of issues in inference and control over such networks.
Mérouane Debbah - Mobile AI: From Cloud AI to on-device AI
Mérouane Debbah is a Full Professor with CentraleSupelec, Gif-sur-Yvette, France, and a Vice-President of the Huawei France Research Center and the Director of the Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Lab (personal homepage).
Abstract of the talk: Fueled by the availability of more data and computing power, recent breakthroughs in cloud-based machine learning (ML) have transformed every aspect of our lives from face recognition and medical diagnosis to natural language processing. However, classical ML exerts severe demands in terms of energy, memory and computing resources, limiting their adoption for resource constrained edge devices. The new breed of intelligent devices requires a novel paradigm change calling for distributed, low-latency and reliable ML at the wireless network edge. This talk will explore the potential of the Mobile AI paradigm to unlock the full potential of 5G and beyond.
